Chinese Herbal Remedy (Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa)

December 15, 2010 By Lokness 1 Comment

This morning, Bryan seems to be losing his voice. He has been having a sore throat for the past two days. While I was thinking to get Bryan some cough drops, I saw my bottle of Chinese herbal remedy, Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa. When I was in Hong Kong, I always came to Pei Pa Koa when I had a sore throat or cough. This herbal remedy is used to prevent voice lost, help with sore throat, and get rid of coughs and cold symptoms.

Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa Box and Bottle

Even though I take this remedy, I never know what the name means and what the ingredients are. The name “Nin Jiom” means “in memory of my mom”. The remedy was started back in Qing Dynasty. A boy’s mother was sick and couldn’t get better, so the boy went to look for a doctor for help. And, a doctor created this remedy and cure the boy’s mother. Who would know there is such a warm story behind? Back to the name, “Pei Pa Koa” means “loquat syrup”. The remedy is made with all natural herbs ingredients, like loquat, ginger, fritillary bulb, pomelo peel, and honey. There are tons of ingredients on the list, and I have never heard many of the things on the list. I swear most Chinese don’t know what those are. But it doesn’t really matter, I believe in Chinese medicine. It is all natural, and Chinese medicine practice has a really long history. Compare to those chemical and artificial flavors, Chinese medicine is a lot more trustworthy.

Ingredients

Pei Pa Koa tastes better than it looks. It is slightly sweet. It has a fruity flavor. It also leaves a cool feeling on the throat after taking it, which is very comforting for a sore throat. Bryan said that it tasted like robitussin. Well… At least, I don’t think it tastes bad.

I bought this stuff two years ago after a bad head cold that I wasn’t able to use it for. Fast forward to now, another really bad head cold, I dig it out of the cupboards and measure out a TB of it. It’s sweet and thick. A lot like honey. Then I went to bed and coughing did not wake me up and I’m barely coughing today. I’m so relieved this works because every time I coughed it felt like my throat was being torn open again and again and I was getting that cough chest pain.

The food in the picture is sweet glutinous rice dumplings w/ black sesame 落湯糍(糯米糍). The word “糍” sounds similar to “錢”, so the dumplings represent money. Eating them will bring you lots of wealth!

The dumplings are chewy & gooey like mochi. Coated in black sesame seeds. Right before eating, dip them in sugar. Perfect sweet treat for the new year!

We just can’t get enough of @somisomiicecream! T We just can’t get enough of @somisomiicecream! Their soft serve is creamy, yet not too sweet. Lots of choices too, like ube, matcha, black sesame etc. The taiyaki is crispy on the outside & filled w/ goodness, like Nutella, red bean & custard. My only wish is that they open a store in the San Gabriel Valley, so we don’t have to travel far every time!😆

2022 is coming to an end! It has been a much bette 2022 is coming to an end! It has been a much better year for me personally. We traveled a bit more (Denver, Monterey, Maine, & Boston) & ate lots of incredible food. I’m drooling just thinking about some of the food. Also, my parents flew in from HK. We finally got to see each other after 3 years. We spent time together & attended my sister’s wedding. And we all finally got covid. It’s looking like things are getting back to normal. I truly hope it is!

Galbi mandu (dumpling) from Chang Hwa Dang (CHD) a Galbi mandu (dumpling) from Chang Hwa Dang (CHD) are so damn GOOD! 🥟 Smokey, little sweet, meaty, & crispy skin. I could eat a few plates of those! We first tried the sampler, but was most impressed by the galbi ones. We like the pork too, but the jalapeño one was way too spicy for my taste. It actually has half of a jalapeño in it.🔥
